BRIEFING

Bavaroise was invited to participate in an extraordinary project known as the Happy Gang. This vibrant brand promotes engaging conversations between parents and children and encourages quality family time through a series of distinct and colorful illustrated card games.

The challenge presented to us was to create the packaging for four decks and design the card layout for a product named "Desbloqueadores de Conversas" ("Conversation Starters). Each deck consists of 50 cards featuring questions related to friendship, nostalgia, and random challenges to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and freedom of expression. Users can explore multiple answers, share their thoughts, discover more about each other, and enjoy moments of laughter with family or friends.

Maria and André sought a unique and customized typographic solution for each deck while maintaining a consistent layout structure to tie them together as a cohesive family visually. The goal was to appeal to different age ranges and distinguish these decks from the previously fully illustrated cards designed for a younger audience.

IDEA

The challenge for these four decks was to make the packaging self-explanatory, addressing a concern the client had encountered with some of their previous products. To address this, we proposed including two or three examples of questions on each cover, accompanied by a description at the bottom, ensuring a uniform approach across all packages to bring consistency to the products.

For each card, we adapted the package cover to the front, while on the back, we created four different patterns corresponding to the themes. Achieving the perfect combination for each side of the packaging proved to be the most challenging aspect, as we needed to ensure distinctiveness when the decks were placed side by side.

Delving into the process for each deck:

"CONVERSAS A DOIS" (Small talk for 2) - 50 questions to get to know those we love the most! (Ages 14-100): We aimed to represent a neutral gender illustration, featuring a large umbrella with two characters inside, resembling a cinematic scene. At the top, we incorporated an organic and customized letter shape.

"PERGUNTAS IMPROVÁVEIS" (Improbable questions) - 50 questions to challenge your imagination! (Ages 10-100): We embraced the concept of doodling and sketching ideas, exemplifying four improbable situations. For the title, our focus was on creating a stamp-like effect, playing with the letters to emphasize the meaning behind the title.

"CONTA-ME A TUA HISTÓRIA" (Tell me your Story) - 50 questions to discover everything about your grandparents. (Ages 6-100): We designed a grid featuring nostalgic elements related to the generation born in the '60s. To convey the idea of dialogue between kids and grandparents, we replaced the "O" in the title with character faces.

"CONVERSAS ENTRE GARFADAS" (Small talk at the Dinner Table) - 50 questions to ask during mealtime! (Ages 8-100): This deck posed a significant challenge as we aimed to represent a diverse family without relying on stereotypes of type, skin, and gender. We illustrated a family of meatballs nesting in a plate of spaghetti (one of the most comforting foods ever made). The title was seamlessly connected to the illustration, represented as a spaghetti line in the last words.
