Room in the City. City dweller #3

Meet my city dweller #3

How did you find your place?

“My sister was living here with another roommate who was conveniently moving out at the time I was moving to San Francisco from Los Angeles. Auspicious. My sister moved out a year ago after finishing school and I found my current roommate via Facebook. “
What is your neighborhood called, btw?
“Technically it's the Lake Street District. Depending on who I describe it to though, it's the Inner or Outer Richmond. For lots of people it's the Edge of the Known Universe.”

How long have you been living in the city? in your neighborhood?

“About two and a half years, all of it in the same apartment.
What inspires you? or what was the inspiration when you decorated your space?
I'm devoted to living the life of an eternal bachelorette. While we often celebrate the handsome cad of a fellow who refuses to settle down, the female equivalent of an unmarried woman is a bitter spinster. We have many concrete concepts of what a bachelor pad looks like, but what does a bachelorette pad look like? I think it's comfortable and almost obstinately feminine. I want my home to remind me of how I should be treated -- like an indulgent princess. And yes, I know that contradicts many folks' conception of what a feminist aspires to. If you'd like to discuss it further, I am always happy to grab a cup of coffee and chat about it.”

Where do you normally get ideas or inspirations in designing/decorating your home?

“Tumblr is a great place to find interior design inspiration”
What is your favorite part of your apartment? or your favorite decoration/ornaments/piece or section?
“Probably my dresser. It's so princess-y. I found it at a thrift store and haggled over the price. I had it in my apartment in West Hollywood, and stored it in Los Angeles until I had the chance to drive down and retrieve it with a Uhaul. I just had to keep it. I'll probably drag it all over the country with me.”

What does HOME mean to you?

“Home is a construct. I am the child of immigrants and so home is a transient idea to me. Home is a space where you feel surrounded with the things and people you love.”
If you could give an advice to someone about decorating a room/apartment..what is the most basic or most important thing that they have to consider in decorating or maintaining their space?
“Take chances. Put your bed in the middle of the room. Get something in a bright color. Hang some risque art.”

Do you like living in San Francisco?

“San Francisco and I are having a hard time right now, but we're still on speaking terms. I'm sure we'll be good friends one day. “

What is San Francisco to you?

“San Francisco is a city of hubris built on trash and tears. There has been a lot of heartache for me in this city. But it's been a really important part of my journey, a place where I broke and then rebuilt myself. I suppose that makes sense for a city that was destroyed in an earthquake and subsequent fire. And I guess I'm just another forty-niner hoping I could strike it rich here.”

What is your favorite part of the city? the most memorable thing you have done or experienced living here ? the most unique?

“My favorite part is probably all the ghosts I have here, drifting in the fog. In such a short time, I've seen friends come and go. I've experienced so much here. Tech and sex, day drinking, amazing food you have to wait over an hour for, lovers come and lovers lost, the grit of downtown and the peace of Land's End all in one small place. Sometimes when I'm walking home, I can see the Golden Gate Bridge rising in the distance, and my heart swells. I love listening to the fog horn at night.”

Anything you want to share with our audience?

“I'm losing my job soon -- would you like to hire me?”
