Considering roles
This was the beginning of my journey. First things first was to think of what roles I would want to investigate applying for. My first thought was game programmer/scripter as that is what I have the most experience in naturally as part of my course. However, I wanted to focus on what I thought to be my core strength, and that is game design. I have been commended by peers before on my creativity with ideas and have pointed out some flaws in others' designs. I also have an interest in examining games while I'm playing them to think of the developers' intentions and how the player reacts. I decided then, to focus on game design for my role in the industry.
Investigating industry roles
This saw me investigating roles in the industry that were available. Looking up various intern roles, I found opportunities for many roles such as level designer and lead designer. However, I do not have any experience or interest in level design. I find that I can't get into a developer headspace on how to design a level, plus I already had preference for game design. One problem I did notice was that a lot of game designer positions were for lead designers, which required experience in the industry I do not yet have. As a result, I continued my search for game design positions, trying to narrow down results by specifying an internship role.
Considering studios
I managed to find an interesting position on "LinkedIn" that piqued my interest. It was a position of game designer as a member of the company "Innova solutions". This seemed promising at first as Innova promised to be provide innovation in the field, and conveniently, were based in the UK. However, looking deeper into the role I discovered that it also required some years of experience, claiming to be "mid-senior level". Furthermore, looking into Innova I was startled to find that I was having trouble finding out if the company even made games. On Innova's website they promote themselves for AI software and do not promote any game development department. Thus, I considered looking at other job searching websites.
Found role
Going onto "Indeed" I managed to find a role for intern game designer at "XR games". After doing some research I found that XR games are responsible for some VR titles I recognise seeing, such as "Zombieland: headshot fever reloaded" and that they were a company focused on innovation in the field of VR hardware. I have experience working with VR hardware so I found the position to be right up my alley and began writing what I would need to apply.
CV
First was a CV, it had been a while since I wrote one but I managed to craft a simple yet well-designed sheet detailing my experience and interests
Cover letter
Second was my cover letter, which I wrote specifically for XR games, going into further detail regarding my enthusiasm for the role, my experience and my strengths.
Portfolio
Then came making a portfolio on Behance, I had already made a portfolio on Behance before so it was simple to do.
Business card
And finally I took a crack at making my own business card using canva. I had used canva before to design a poster so I already knew the software, and after looking up a template for a business card, I managed to design it to fit my style.
