Light Year 2015 Calendar

Light Year 2015 Calendar
175 x 135 cm, 12.7 cm diameter discs
Pure White Construction by French Paper, 80 lb cover stock
Typeface: DIN Pro Light

This calendar project is based on the concepts light, quiet and reveal. The calendar demonstrates the subtle beauty of the stars and the moon as they come into the night sky throughout the year. Through the technique of blind embossing and debossing, the quiet reveal of the celestial bodies is achieved. A minimal amount of color reinforces the idea of light, and the white-on-white design reflects the purity of the stars as they reveal themselves in the night sky.

The constellations are organized into columns, and each column represents one month of the Gregorian Calendar. The constellations hang within the month in which they are highest in the sky and best visible from Earth. The second side of the discs contains the phases of the moon throughout the year. There are 88 discs, one for each modern constellation.

The discs are hung in a linear fashion and make up a plane. They are tied together in a way that they are free to rotate individually. This structure demonstrates the theory of the universe as being a plane containing many spherical, rotating celestial bodies.

The type on the calendar is set in DIN Pro Light at 9/13 pts. DIN is a geometric sans serif and possesses a scientific quality in its letterforms. The development of DIN was originally for use on signage in Germany, and in this project its purpose is similar, providing coodinates of the stars for navigational purposes.
