The data visualization displays the amount of food waste generated over the course of a year in a selection of European countries. For each country, the quantity of food waste is shown by sector of activity. The five identified sectors are: primary food production, food processing, trade, catering, and household activities. Food waste data is measured in kilograms per capita of fresh weight. Additionally, the total food waste in each country is indicated in tons of fresh mass.

The definition of food waste includes "food waste is any food and inedible parts of food, that has entered in the food supply chain, that then has been removed or discarded from the food supply chain or at the final consumption stage, that is finally destined to be processed as waste" (Eurostat).
