Monsters of the Deep - Firefly squid

Monsters of the Deep - Firefly squid
A quickie for Nessie Press... soon to be in print :D
Did this for Nessie Press Zine - Monsters of the Deep KickStarter. The firefly squid (a real creature you can go ahead and google, I'll wait) isn’t big, but I’m sure somewhere, sometime, a little race of marine explorers will find themselves being watched by a terrifying swarm of these nature’s alien mother-ships.  Scroll down to watch the process and the final illustration.
I start with an extra-simple sketching session. Once I find the figures, postures and elements I want to include, at the same time kinda-solving a thumbnail comp, I scan the session and then go to PS

Photoshop's "Mixed Media sketch" - I cut, paste and transform elements from the scan to find the general comp. Then I draw until I'm happy with the flow and positioning of everything. Of course, several parts of the drawing will go away, as the values I will use in this image are going to make them unreadable or plain unappealing.

Following the publication constraints, I solve the image in grayscale, by pretty much "drawing" with the numerous light spots and keeping modeling to a minimum.

I'm happy with this quickie. You can keep up with Nessie Press here
