This project was to create a design for a featured article in a magazine. I chose the article "The super corals of the great barrier reef". In the article it talks about how the coral reef is slowly dying due to global warming. 

Above I started with research: I wrote down information about coral, global warming, and created a mood board of coral reefs. I also watched many documentaries on global warming and coral. If water temperatures are too warm the coral will start to bleach and the algae will be expelled from the it.

Above are sketches of different ideations of layouts for the article. Using coral textures, reef formations, and shapes of coral.

To create coral and water-like textures using watercoloring. The blues and greens represent the algae being expelled from the coral. While the brown and black were to represent the dead coral after all the algae is gone and substances grow and take over.

To create the layout I used an X-ACTO knife to cut out the different shapes of coral. I also crumpled paper to add dimension and create textured rocks. 

I brought the watercolored backgrounds into Photoshop and masked the paper coral to blend in with the background.

Above is the final design for the magazine featured article. The titled font was chosen to mimic the beautiful shapes of coral while the body text is san-serif and minimalistic to contrast the design.
