Poster Series - Thinking Hierarchy

For this assignment we were asked to choose a design style and create a poster for an actual upcoming event in our area or New York City. I chose to do posters for Walker Stalker Con which is a zombie, horror, sci-fi fan convention that tours the country and is coming to Boston shortly.
For this poster I wanted to do something similar to Bauhaus style, with linear type and bold, contrasting colors and shapes.
For this poster I wanted to do something in a modernistic style, with linear type, lots of white space and use of a sans serif font.
For this project we were asked to design two posters for an upcoming event in our local area or in New York City. I chose to use the upcoming Boston Walker Stalker Con, which is a zombie, horror, and sci-fi fan convention. I initially had several ideas of what I wanted to do for these posters so I tried to choose design styles that I thought would help reflect my ideas.
The first poster was inspired by Bauhaus design style. I love how the Bauhaus style uses typography in a linear format and also uses sections of bold, contrasting color. I think that my poster was overall fairly successful. I really like the contrast of the red with the mostly black and white background. I think it really helps the poster pop and still has a feel like something from the Bauhaus style.
For my 2nd poster I chose to do something that was based on modernism. My goal was to use a sans serif font and significant white space, which is typical of modernistic design. I especially like how many of the modernistic pieces have some kind of eye-catching component to them; I think the blood splatter meets that criteria.
Overall, I think I was successful in bringing to life what I had envisioned in my head and that they were somewhat identifiable as the style I was trying to use. I would like to revisit this assignment down the road after some more research and possibly try to do a series of posters in one common style. Out of my two posters, I tend to lean towards liking the Bauhaus style one more, as I really am drawn to the linear type and contrasting colors.
