Not Kinfolk is a parody magazine that takes inspiration from Kinfolk Magazine. However, it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Kinfolk Magazine. The content published in Not Kinfolk is intended to be humorous and entertaining, and should not be taken seriously. Any similarities in design, content or style between Not Kinfolk and Kinfolk Magazine are deliberate and meant to be part of the parody. The texts and photographs featured in Not Kinfolk are original works by the author, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. I was tasked to create a book about 'camp'. What came to mind immediately after hearing the project brief https://www.tiktok.com/@simplejeee/video/7026621824947604738?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7182607547685438978 , a dance cover of Bole Chudiyan from "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham". Filmed at some void deck with a mobile phone in casual clothes, it is a cheap production and nowhere close the quality in the movie. However, it was very entertaining and so well-executed in terms of mirroring the frames and choreography. This is what camp means to me – failing at something really well.
I re-interpreted this definition into Not Kinfolk, envisioned to be a really good failure at recreating Kinfolk. Kinfolk is all about slow living and whatever millennials define to be aesthetic.
In Not Kinfolk, the essence of Kinfolk is reduced to 3 main sections and curated through the point of view of a Gen-Z: People, Interior Design and Travel.
The rest of the publication are literally filler pages, injecting with humour.
1. People
Instead of featuring actual reputable people, this section is of friends who have no qualifications whatsoever to be in a magazine like Kinfolk.
2. Interior Design
As most Gen-Zs in Singapore are students, I featured study tables/ working spaces instead of full-on houses.
3. Travel
Instead of travel, this section is really just "go outside".
