BACHELOR THESIS (THEORY)

Even though the term design is widely discussed in design theory and there are large amounts of information about design, design objects, design basics, design history and design research, the general understanding and public perception of design is less clear. If hearing from friends and family that design is “stuff with computers” or “something about advertising,” or trying to explain to a client why a job costs so much, the creative process often stays hidden.

Even for people with a greater understanding for the design occupation, the majority of design work is invisible, be it type design, macro typography, drafts and revisions, programming or the development of abstract concepts. The steps from the beginning of an idea to its execution are rarely regarded.

Why is that? Where does it come from? And why the hell doesn’t my mother actually know what I do? I searched for the answers to these questions in my bachelor thesis.

The theoretical part of my bachelor thesis analyzes the origin of the design occupation, the theoretical positions about design itself and what makes understanding design so complicated.
