Rafael Blando Torres's profile

Wrinkle, wrinkle little George

This oeuvre is part of the Monēta series trough which I explore one axis of hyper consumerism. My intention is to detonate a critique focused on two thoughts: one that leads us to revalorize what we see and use as an instrument of change, and another that makes us reshape the power discourses present within the graphic representations designed by the prevailing hegemonies. My methodology consists of a detailed analysis of the iconography present in all forms of currency primarily from Mexico and The United States of America, but also from those countries where my extended stays have allowed me to understand part of the cultural iconography of that country. In all those bills and coins I have found discursive similitudes that have led me to question and critique different aspects such as identity, collective memory and the prevailing power relations present in the currency. Once classified I analyze each icon, character or symbol present in the bill or coin so that I can intervene them, physical or digitally, and then propose a new discourse alternate to the official discourse that created the currency.
