Bloomberg Coal Countdown — Video campaign
Overview — We help Bloomberg Philanthropies track Coal plant closures around the world & showcase, in video, the effort that countries are putting into shifting to sustainable energy sources.

Despite today’s environmental attention, western countries including US & Europe are still burning coal to produce energy —which is one of the worst ways to do so.

The Bloomberg team has been tracking & sharing Coal Plant Open Data to push governments to meet their decarbonisation goals. They asked Algo to turn their website into a shareable video template, showcasing a country’s usage of Coal & how it is trending.

Design-wise we want to instantly showcase changes in the usage of Coal by a country. One way to achieve this: the colour palette of each video is linked to the data: it is picked among 5 colour options in function of the country ranking in the usage of Coal (among 107 countries).

Graphs — Often graphs are the easiest way to see the full picture out of complex data. We designed the graphs of this project striking to be consistent & informative, no matter what values are displayed. The graphs in the video showcase ① the % of plants closed, ② the country’s coal usage through the decades & ③ how much coal is used as the nation’s electricity source.

Maps — The data include the exact location of each coal plant unit around the world. We used Mapbox to generate dynamic maps & put a pin on every plant, using different colours to highlight if the plant is operational, planned or retired. It’s quite surprising to see where coal plants are located near you.

Objective — “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it” says Mike Bloomberg. It’s true – open & public data help us fight sensationalism & keep governments responsible for their behaviour. We are beyond excited we could help better inform the public and give our contribution to the fight against coal.

Podcast Mode — We’re excited to launch a new interactive feature on our website. Browse the case study on desktop, activate Podcast Mode & listen to Rebecca, our ultra-realistic AI voice (powered by our partner Play.ht) tell you all about our project, as you scroll through the page.

Rebecca (& other AI voices) are now available to use on Algo projects.
