ARLES
FRANCE
With more than two millenniums of history, Arles has gone thru changes in names from the settlement is attested as Arelate in the mid-1st century BC (Caesar), Areláte (Ἀρελάτε) in the early 1st c. AD (Strabo), Arlate civitas in 954, and Arle in the 13th century.  Many artists have lived and worked in this city because of the southern light, including Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Jacques Réattu, Peter Brown, and the famous Vincent van Gogh who lived in Arles from 1888 to 1889 and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there. Today, this city in southern France is a robust contemporary art scene.
Arles is my favorite place to spend the summer. My highlight would be visiting the Cafe La Nuit at night; this is the exact cafe where Vincent van Gogh painted in 1888! In fact, whenever I feel stressed with work, I often re-imagine my time walking around the city and enjoying the annual art festival there. I certainly can taste the bright lazy-summer atmosphere, just like what Vincent van Gogh wrote in a letter to his brother ".. I always think that what we need is sunshine and fine weather..". Enjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing travel visual clips, where I share a glimpse of my travel visuals and thoughts. Each series features a paragraph about the history of the place, followed by a paragraph describing my thoughts while exploring that place. Accompanied by no more than fifteen carefully curated images that I took, each series is intended to give you the umami of travel. - Julius Yls
