BARN arch undertook the renovation of a part of the Old Olive Oil Factory and the design of the Gordo Restaurant in Güre, Balıkesir.

The project attitude is based on maintaining the old potentials and processing the geographical character of the building during the re-functioning of the existing historical building. The historical building pattern extending in the section of Sea-Kaz Mountains in Güre, acts as a background that allows the visitor to notice the design prior to arriving the area. Undoubtedly, some lands are difficult to describe with an article or story, and Güre is one of them.

The restaurant volume is positioned linearly within the historical factory characteristic that cuts the coast. Two elements that will form the most basic character of the space, the roof and the walls, are evaluated regarding the existing building, and are complimented with a floor texture that is suitable to the characteristics of the region. The high ceiling of the factory and the roof were reinforced and the carrying structure was exposed in the open; stone texture with user-oriented stratification and partial scraping that occurred in the existing walls over time. 

The ground material was applied on the Terrazzo flooring with stones from the region was applied on site, thus the three hard characteristics of the design was in unity and in completion. The layout is designed on an axis perpendicular to the beach due to the current mass geometry, and users are directed to meet new perspectives enriched in the process while experiencing this axis. On car-parking entrance of the users, focus is on the sea vista seen through the opening to the garden, and as they approach to the door, a feeling of depth of the historical roof adds to the experience. The closed volume opening to the garden is the restaurant itself in the winter, but in summer this volume offers an exciting transition experience for the users who are included in the space from the back side.

Gordo contains many elements that are architecturally significant, however, in short, it is a successful integration where interventions and add-ons have found a response in the living space. The development of the restaurant every day by adhering to the first scenario shows the fruitful nature of the first ideas in the ongoing process.​​​​​​​
