This poster was the final project for our Visual History, Research and Discourse class. We had to think about our future design identity, pick a post-war design period, and fashion a poster that would communicate our identity based on the style of that time period. I chose post-war Japanse design, particularly the work of Yusaku Kamekura and Ikko Tanaka. My identity is focused on synthesis, the ability to combine my different backgrounds and talents - linguistics, biology, design and illustration - into one cohesive goal or objective. The transparent, geometric symbols work to show the layering of the individual shapes into one larger shape which remains poetic in its isolation. While many Japanese compositions are symmetrical, I wanted to give this poster a less static feeling and thus turned it into an asymmetrica composition. The texture served as a reference to traditional, non-digital elements (traditional illustrations, for example).
