Design strategy
Becoming Donald Iverach Cresswell is based on a man's journey through life being the best he can be, whether this is in the workplace or at home, or just in general. The book runs in chronological order starting from when Donald was around 13 years old up to the present day when he is in and out of retirement. Donald has always loved anything to do with building or fixing things, helping others where he can, his job as an IT guy at the airport, and his beloved cars.

Because of this love for all things technical the illustrations in the book took a technical drawing approach, taking inspiration from blueprints and car manuals. This love Donald has for cars is what mainly drove the story forward and provided a lot of the imagery presented, somehow in all the chapters a car is involved directly or indirectly in building Donald as a character. The colours were inspired by technical manuals and books found in the airports, they also complement Donald's calm, kind and fun nature and approach to life.
Process work
Above are some photos (both found and taken by myself) that inspired the story and visuals.

Mood board for layouts and illustration style.

Media exploration and style development before and after moving to a digital drawing style as seen in the final illustrations.

Rough storyboard layouts before digitising the illustrations and layouts properly.
