Monumental Woman

Street Art
Before 2022's SunnyDayz Mural Fest, of the 34 murals located in Edmond, Oklahoma, only 4 were painted by women! Unfortunately this is a relatively common occurrence in the field of murals and public art, and the underrepresentation of female artists remains a consistent issue, with a majority of high level projects and places in street art festivals often going to male artists. (If asked to name 5 famous female street artists, could you? My guess is that you'd think about ObeyGiant, Kaws or Banksy instead...) My piece, "Monumental Woman", painted on the outside of a City Council building in the city's historic downtown, aims to pay homage to the female artist, and its oversized scale intends to literally create a place for women  in the art industry in a "big" way. Each figure stands roughly 13ft (4m) tall, and represents the diversity of women and non-binary artists who aim to fight for their place in the field.

SunnyDayz Mural Festival was initiated by the Oklahoma Mural Syndicate, but aims to be a festival that exclusively features women and non-binary artists with projects and festivals throughout the state of Oklahoma. 2022 is the festival's second year.
