Mountains have been, and are, a central sacred element of many religions and beliefs.11 For many, the most symbolic aspect is the mountaintop because it is identified as the closest thing to Heaven,12 in particular where the gods reside. gods and spirits —as on Mount Olympus in Greek mythology13— or where the saints and prophets met God and consecrated themselves to his work1114 —such as Moses on Mount Sinai in Judaism,15 or especially Jesus on Mount Tabor or Mohammed on Jebel El Nour.  The mountain is sometimes considered the axis of the world,12 such as Mount Meru—often identified with Mount Kailash in Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism—which makes it the residence of Shiva.16 In some cases , the sacred mountain is purely mythical, like the Hara Berezaiti in Zoroastrianism.  Volcanoes, such as Mount Etna in Italy, were also considered sacred, either as the home of gods—Etna was the home of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and the forge—or as gateways to the Underworld.
