The brief was to redesign a newspaper, and I chose Le Monde Diplomatique, one of the very few norwegian newspapers that has a format that is bigger than the tabloid format. I really like this newspaper, but the existing design does not communicate the content in a very good way - my opinion anyway. This project was very much about the big picture and the small typographic details. In a newspaper it is very important to use typography meant for lots of text (a typeface with big x-height and low over-/under-lengths), and the flexibility of the typography is important - as the ones desking at news paper rarely has time to work with each different element of text or layout. I therefore chose one big element as the one that is "custom made" for each edition, and that is the front page and one inside page that contains text as an extension of the image.
Every edition has two frontpages, because each newspaper has two sections; one for news and one for cultur. The newspaper is divided in the middle, and if you turn the newspaper around, the backpage is a frontpage. The newsfrontpage is black and white, and the cultur-frontpage is in colors.
