The naming of things
Exposition in Dudok's town hall of Hilversum
In the spring of 2011 I had an exposition of installation-art with two classmates of mine: Seeltje van Boeckel and Paul Smit. We were asked by the municipality of Hilversum as a result of the class-exposition we had ealier in december. They wanted us to recreate the work we showed there into a full exposition that would fit in their town hall designed by Dudok.
The theme of the expositon is language, to what extend is language encompassing the world around us? In all of the works there is a dinstinction between the material "real world", and the representation of it through language. This distinction is represented through the use of 'true objects" and the shadow of these objects. In the different works we show the shortcommings of language as well as the gains of the way we formed language to refer to the world around us.

We were responsible for all the steps in the proces of realizing the exposition. From writing the project-proposal, the balance, looking for sponsors, the PR and organizing tours for classes to designing flyers and poster, creating the concepts as well as the installations, and organizing the official opening.
"Vogel" ("Bird")
As explained earlier we were asked for this exposition as a result of the work we created at school. This installation is called "Vogel" (Bird). With this work we shed light on the contrast between the very simple words we use to talk about in essence very complex matter. Don't we lose a lot of detail and nuance about the world around us in this process?

As subject we chose the object 'bird', because this word is a good example of the process we want to explain, but this work represents all words in general. On the one side is the true matter of the bird, his feathers, bones, beak and claws. This represents all the intricate parts the bird is made from, maybe even his feelings, it's symbolic meaning, his biological history and so on. But on the wall you see the shadow off all this complex matter, the word "bird". In contrast with the chaos of the matter the word looks eerily abstract and simplistic. It looks almost impossible that this is really the shadow of the matter of the bird.
Here you see how we recreated the work for the town hall.
Mobilé Helvetica
With this work we focussed letters as the building-blocks of our communication. By combining these letters sounds are created, with which an endless number of words can be made. Here we focus on the beauty of the shapes of these letters. The shadow plays an interesting game with the letter combinations. Letters are being combined into sounds, sometimes even words by the random movement of the mobilé.
Pragmatisme (Pragmatism)
We use language to communicate our experiences. But to what extend can you fully grasp an experience in language? Things like mimic, expressions or emotions are too complex to express in words. There is just too much going on in one moment for it to be able to describe in words.
Pragamtisme (Pragmatism)
This work is about the process that precedes the application of language. When we intepret the world around us we put it into our own perspective, that's how we order the information that is presented to us. We create a truth that is valid for us. That's how we bring order to the world, but this order is not contained in the world itself. It's just one way of looking at it, from our unique perpective.
