Painting of the Past

Painting of the Past
It's only art if it's being watched
On this painting you see shadowy images of former watchers. The movement is slow and flickery. Only after watching the painting for a while you slowly see yourself entering the picture frame.

The concept behind this interactive painting is that the artwork itself actually doesn't exist. The painting is being created out of the way it has been viewed in the past.

The effect on the viewers is very strong, they are intrigued by the movement on the canvas, after a while they start 'playing' with their own image in the painting. But because of the delay this has a very relaxing effect on the viewers, they really take their time to watch the painting evolve.

I made it together with Dewi Wille and Elwin v.d. Hazel. I focussed on the coding using processing.

We showed our work on the exposition 'Today's art spectrum' in Hilversum on April 14th.
The setting at 'today's art spectrum'. Every location creates another style of painting, because of difference's in location and lighting, it's very interesting to play with that. Also the amount of delay is dependent on the number and frequency of visitors.
