'Life of Pi' Poster Design & Motion Titles

Life of Pi Synopsis

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.
Life of Pi's narrative is full of visual metaphor and plays on believability, one's sense of reality. This was the main theme I wanted to carry over in the poster and Blu-Ray Case. I used a silhouette of the tiger to frame in the title character and to further play with the underlying question of the movie, does the tiger symbolize the man, is it real, or did it all happen? I also wanted the style of the illustration to allude to a more traditional Eastern Indian art style.

For the Motion Titles, I again wanted to carry over the idea of believability and reality that the movie makes the viewer question. My goal was to suggest this visual metaphor by using transition and animated scenes that toy with the sequence's sense of reality. The film is also reflective in nature and I wanted to carry that over using ripple motifs and color screens where a horizon between water and sky is not noticeable (also a call to Ang Lee's wonderful direction of the film).
