Brief
How might we use the location-based capabilities of phones to create an app that maps concealed aspects of the unseen city.

Inspiration
The energy in C.Moore Hardy’s photographs from significant protests and rallies of the 1980’s to early 2000’s, found in the City of Sydney Archives.

Concept
The rigidity and regulation of the city conceals its more rhythmic dimensions which disclose the ture values of place and its people. Vocal explores local protests via a collaborative map. It traves historical and current stories of activism and liberation, distilling the consciousness of an area.

Function
Vocal is a collaborative map that allows users to explore, track, and add protests in their local area. It uses both modern user-generated dat as well as data from the City of Sydney Archives.

Using the user inputs into the Vocal app, Ai software pulls keywords from specific areas and constructs 'wordclouds,' which are presented on real-time outdoor assets such as digital screens on bus shelters. This is to easily communicate the most common terms associated with protests in that area, thus accurately reflecting the values of the area in which they are found.
