Pirc-Tobin - Logo & Branding Design

Design Challenge
Pirc-Tobin Construction is an excavation/grading/concrete/sewer & water main installation business. Pirc-Tobin had been relying on a logo that dated back to the formation of the company in 2005. The company now has an excellent reputation and while highly sought after, has several strong competitors. Goals for the new logo were to, bring the logo up-to-date, show professionalism and integrity, and be distinct from the competition.

Design Philosophy
Choose colors that are unique to Pirc-Tobin to differentiate from the competition. Reds and saturated blues were set aside for oranges, purples, and warm grays. All of the work Pirc-Tobin does is at grade level or under grade level. So the logos are build to reinforce what they do is "underneath" or under grade. Each of the proposed logos has graphical elements that are at or under the baseline of the "Pric-Tobin" text. Basically reversing how a typical logo is designed. Unique font choices for an additional level of differentiation.

DESIGN ATTRIBUTES - Approved Logo
Icon uses the “b” in “Tobin” as a very stylized bucket of a backhoe or shovel. While Pirc-Tobin does not use something as small as a shovel, it still implies digging or excavating earth. The “b” points below grade to two orange stripped steps. Steps can imply several attributes, depths of excavating/sides of a trench/buried or burying utilities/guided boring.

Tagline chosen to reinforce the two orange “steps”.

Font implies tubes, tunnels or lines such as sewer, electric, gas or communication. Has a technical feel but still looks interesting and unique.

Color palette comprises a very dark warm purple with bright orange tones and very warm grays. Purple implies integrity, trust and confidence. Oranges imply energy, inclusiveness, hard work and safety.
