Nizwa Fort is a 17th-century fortification in the city of Nizwa in Oman, serving as the residence of the Imams and Walis, the rulers of Nizwa, and a symbol of power and resistance. It is considered one of the best-preserved forts in Oman and features a circular tower, connected walls, towers, and gateways, and well-preserved interior with original features. Nizwa Fort is a significant cultural and historical monument in Oman, an important part of the country's heritage, and a popular tourist attraction, providing a unique glimpse into Omani history and culture.
I visited many fortresses during my travel, and Nizwa Fort is one of those forts that doesn't feel intimidating. I would say that the interior architecture is somehow relatively comfortable and even romantic. This is also well reflected in the visitors, that seem relaxed and enjoy the beauty of every corner. Two of my highlights would be the open courtyard with an interesting triangle shape of stairs leading to the top of the fortress wall. You can have a beautiful bird's view of the surrounding houses and dates trees from here. The second one is the guard's parade which is very interesting to watch and adds an ancient feel to the atmosphere. Once I read a quote by an unknow, "Nizwa is a city rich in history, culture, and tradition, and the Nizwa Fort is one of the most impressive fortifications in the country. It's a place that transports visitors back in time, giving them a unique glimpse into the past and the role it played in shaping the Oman of today." Enjoy!
