Contested peripheries is an atelier of Manchester School of Architecture, aims to capture an understanding of the peripheries’ material complexity, socio-material entanglements as a mode of urban inclusion. Architecture is a medium to develop social and theoretical intervention, not necessarily through physical inclusion of buildings but also covers a deeper study and peripheral approach in determining a suitable connectivity and network to stitch the complex urban fabric.

This research project is an ongoing process of understanding the heterogeneous networks along the geographical test ground of Manchester Ship Canal by linking and mapping the configuration of the urban physical components and the operational principles of infrastructures, juxtaposing them with the circulatory system of the Ship Canal. The initial approach of understanding the physical characteristic of the canal is crucial in order for the project o develop further to determine an appropriate urban and architectural intervention on site.

Most of the graphical representations are to develop theoretical set of idea on how the physicality of Manchester Ship Canal works and defines the canal the way it has been progressing throughout the whole historical process since 1897. Focusing on water infrastructural connectivity along the Ship Canal, this study will be taken further through a determined medium (in progress) as a tool to bring architecture and gentrify the interesting peripheral urban condition.
