Swan Circus
Commissioned Mural, 2010 - 2011
Commissioned Mural, 2010 - 2011
The following are photographs of a mural I painted for The Canteen (a bar and music venue in Stokes Croft, Bristol)
The piece was influenced by the Greek myth of 'Leda and the Swan' which tells of a woman that was raped by a god who had taken the form of a swan so that he could deceive and violate her.
The mural is a twist on the tale, and I have chosen to depict Leda as an otherwordly and fiercely independent female character. Levitating, she 'disciplines' the swan by grasping him firmly round the neck. Her power is potent....discreet....innate. She is a symbol for freedom, independence and strength- a feminist archetype. The circus lemurs were added to introduce a sense of playfulness into the imagery. Overall, I wanted the imagery to be stimulating, playful, colorful and inspiring for women (the mural is located in the ladies lavatory!)
