Volga Volga Brand Identity's profile

Ivangorod Fortress. A tourist brand.

Ivangorod Fortress
Russian character in the new tourism brand

The Ivangorod Fortress was built in 1492 by Ivan III and became the western outpost of the young Russian state. The Narva and Ivangorod fortresses stand on the territory of different countries within an arrow's flight distance – there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Separated by a river, they are an impressive monument to architecture and history on the border between Russia and Estonia.

The Ivangorod Fortress brand is based on the idea of the country's cultural heritage. The architectural ensemble conveys a sense of connection with the past and respect for the ancient architects. The creative concept is inspired by the historical authenticity and monumentality of the fortifications.

The unified visual image system is based on the shape of a military banner in mediaeval Russia. The banner was used to mark the place where the troops gathered. The different shape of the ends is a specific distinguishing feature of the Russian flag of that time, and this feature is represented in the brand identity. Using the Small Powder Barn as an example, we developed the logic and structure of the interaction between the main and contextual design elements.

The brand was developed as part of the international project «EstRusFortTour-2», which aims to develop the two fortresses as a single tourist site of great cultural and tourist value. The leading partner of the project is the Ministry of Development and Economy of Narva. On the Russian side, the project was implemented by the Leningrad Region Museum Agency.
