"Com que se pode jogar" - design and illustrations

The book “Com que se pode jogar” tells the story of three women. Their stories take place independently, but at the same time they are connected by the figure of a man. For this reason, I chose to separate the three chapters of the book (each one dedicated to one of the protagonists) and unite them within an extensive accordion-shaped cover. So, while these stories are separate, they are also connected and are part of the same book. Likewise, the cover design features an illustration that extends throughout it and shows us the figure of the three women contained within the silhouette of a man, the character that links the three parts of the book. The cover also features illustrations of certain elements that make reference to each of the chapters, as if creating different covers for each of them. The production of the book is entirely handmade, with manual sewing and binding and RISO printing.
Because it is so complex, the design of this book generates some problems throughout its composition. On the cover, all the positioning of texts and illustrations has to take into account the different folds and cuts of the book, as well as balance the composition and make everything fit when the book is closed and that everything also makes sense with the book opened. In this sense, the cover illustration plays an essential role, as it unifies the entire cover and also tells the story of the book through images when it is open, as it brings elements of each chapter.
In this next video we can see some of the production of this book, which I had the opportunity to coordinate and be a part of, cutting, sewing and binding the books. It is always a great pleasure to be part of the whole process, from the creative development, conceiving the design and illustrations and also in the making of a book.
Thanks!
