"Freak Show" Deck of Cards

This project was created with the teamwork of my graphic design class. Students were broken into groups and each was assigned certain cards of each suit until the whole deck was covered. The theme chosen for the deck was "Freak Show". Different mediums were required for each card that an individual had. All cards were digitally scanned and placed in Adobe InDesign for final execution.

My five cards are highlighted here:
1. Ace of Spades- created with marker, spraypaint, stencil. The stencil was made to signify a circus tent but also keeping shape of the spade. The background was created to resemble "old-style" Coney Island circus with grit- something you would see posted on a wall with graffiti in the background.

2. 3 of Spades- created with colored pencils. The image focuses on a 3 breasted woman- something you would see at a freak show. Each breast has a spade on it to resemble the 3 of spades.

3. 6 of Spades- created with cut cardboard, paint, lights. The image for this card was made to resemble the light up signs you would see at a circus or freak show. Again, 6 spades are shown to resemble the number of the card.

4. 8 of Spades- created with watercolors. The image of this card is a woman laying on a bed of nails- another image you would expect to see at a freak show. The "nails" she is laying on are all spades, again there are 8 in the foreground, keeping up with the consistency of the number of spades to the number on the card.

5. Queen of Spades- created with cut paper collage. I wanted to keep the queen image similiar to one you would see in a normal deck of cards. To add the "freak show" aspect, i decided to make her into a bearded lady, with piercings.

I was also voted by the class to design the image for the back of the cards. I created a hand drawn lettering that reads "Freak Show", and helped other students create the background for the lettering by spraypainting and ripping up a large white sheet. Everything was then packaged in InDesign for completion.
