Focal productivity app

Topic

We have analysed a real life situation that college students of all fields suffer from, which is “burnout”. With information we gathered throughout the project, we developed an output to help solve “burnout”.

What is burnout?

Because burnout was officially recognised in 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an occupational phenomenon and was added to their International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Burnout can make students feel defeated and cynical about their academics. In turn this may result in them avoiding assignments or even skipping class. Their academic performance and overall creativity can also take a hit. Everyone reacts differently to burnout; some have the will power to push through it at the cost of their mental wellbeing, while others give up and consider dropping out of school due to the unbearable stress.

POV statement

How might we create a tool for college students between the age of 18 to 25 experiencing burnout that will help the student focus on their tasks and not get distracted?

Solution
We created a productivity app called Focal that will help college students record and keep track of their tasks while also monitoring their progress, reminding them to stay focused and managing their distractions.
Typography and Colour Palette
Typeface

Lato is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Łukasz Dziedzic. It was released in 2015. The name "Lato" is Polish for "summer" which contrasts to our colour palette conceptually. Being that the concepts of "summer" plays into our themes of calm, tranquil and serene, that we hope our colours give off.

Colours

Blue, as our main colour, calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. It is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly. Blue is often seen as a sign of stability and reliability.

Green, as our accent colour, is a color that can evoke powerful emotions. It is a dominant color in nature that makes you think of growth.
Green evokes a feeling of abundance and is associated with refreshment and peace, rest and security.
Features
Welcome page

The main page where you can choose to either create a new account or sign into one you already have.

Profile Set Up 1

Where you enter in your basic account info and where you can choose to link your app to various other accounts so the app may track your screen time.

Profile Set Up 2

This page asks you a few questions so the app can get to know you better and personalize certain features.
Task Management

You can record as many tasks as you need into this page, monitor them, and tick them off as you finish them.

User Statistics

This page is part of the task management page and can be scrolled down to. It functions as a progress tracker for your tasks and a productivity tracker/overview so you can compare your productivity over the multiple days, weeks and months. This page also features a suggestion button that will give you advice on how you could improve your productivity.

Screen Time Overview

This feature is lower down on the same page as the task manager and the user statistics. This function tracks the user's screen time and apps used to monitor what you're up to when on your phone or on your laptop /pc. You can also view these records of your activity and see how much time you're spending on apps that are productive and what apps may distract you from your work. This function also has a "Reduce Your Time" or Restrictor feature that allows you to set daily limits on certain apps, limiting how much time you'll be allowed to spend on certain apps
Restrictor Notification

This is an example of the Restrictor feature, this notification will pop up when the daily time limit has been reached and/or surpassed on the given app. When it does Focal will close the app that has reached its daily limit.

More Options

This page is for the user to access various options and settings to personalize their app experience.
Focus Timer

This page houses two features. An alarm keeper which lets you set various alarms that help you manage your work schedule and that helps remind you to take breaks in between so you don't end up overworking yourself. The second feature is called Deadzone, when activated the app fully takes over the screen only and blocks out most notifications to limit your distractions as well as creating a calming every changing wave-like gradient effect which is meant to ease the mind when viewed.
