For Battlefield 1 I was hired by Dice to help out with the UI design for the single player campaign in 2016. As with any large project like this, it is a team effort (so I'm not taking credit for anything else here other than UI design parts).
The pigeon sequence was an interesting task. The need here was to guide the player to the desired location. As far as possible we wanted to exclude any apparent UI element or icon. It simply takes the illusion away. So I started to think about how birds navigate using magnetic fields. In order to visualize it transferred that over to sonar pings instead and created an imaginary beacon of sorts. I think it works really well in al its simplicity, which was the goal.
