Yoga House - Portugal

The building form has been generated by reflecting upon the nature of the steep, wooded site and views over the terrain. The functions (entrance, reception, changing, studio) are arranged sequentially, parallel to the cliff, to fit the site’s narrow gauge. The building’s roof is sloped to follow the angle of the adjacent access road as it drops across the hill from north-west to south-east. Within the volume, the entrance/changing area affords controlled glimpses over the cliff.
A flight of stairs leads the yoga studio above. Views gradually open up as the stairs rise. A full vista over the surrounding landscape is revealed on arrival at the studio.
The elevating of the studio space allows the yoga garden below to benefit from additional shaded space by extending under the building structure. The roof of the yoga studio is dramatically lifted at its western corner to draw the eye to the endless perspective across the landscape, and focus the mind on the infinite. The resultant Yoga house is an intervention that has been fashioned by an integrates with its natural context. To this end, it reflects the yogic experience of joining in a deeper relationship with the universe.
