Digital Illustration Final Project:

Design an illustrated cover for a fictional children’s book: Invaders from Outer Space.

When I first received this project, my first instinct was to run with a very Disney / My little Pony style - but I realized that I often fall back to this style and so I decided to go on a different path by attempting a very sketched looking watercolour book cover. After several sketches of what kind of layout might interest children, I took my ideas to my executive producer (Aka Adriana, my 8 year old Niece) and she advised me that kids her age like “Bubble letters”, “The moon” and of course “Green aliens!”.
With this information in hand, I made some changes before getting right to work on the different elements. Since I am not fantastic at painting, I opted for the use of watercolour pencils and made each element separately, so that the final product would have a lovely cut-out look to it.

The final project was well received by my teacher and my classmates - but most importantly it was approved by my niece.
"Green Alien"
Working on the layout prior to scanning each element in. Decided to redo the background so that the sky, stars and moon would become seperate elements.
Hand drawn type added to give a space-appropriate look while still adhereing to the "bubble letters" rule.
Digital layout.
