The greek myth, told by Ovid in the Metamorphoses (book XIIII) recounts the great love between the young shepherd Acis, son of the god Pan, and Galatea (“known as milk-white”), a beautiful sea-nymph beloved by the gods.
Because of this love the Cyclops Polyphemus was jealous; after being refused by Galatea, crushed Acis with a massive stone. Heart-broken, Galatea bursted into tears. The gods, to soothe her from pain, turned the shepherd’s blood in a beautiful river flowing from the foot of Etna volcano to the sea, where the lovers used to meet up, and where they now love each other forever.
