Wild Horses in the Wild

Wild Horses in the Wild

In the desert of Nevada small herds of wild horses roam.  With bloodlines that go back 400 years in the region, they have evolved to become part of the landscape.  The herds break down into small bands, each with a dominant stallion.  The bands come together to socialize, fight over mares, and shift loyalties.  While some fights between stallions are about sparing practices, they can sometimes become dramatic fights to the death.

Horses are highly social animals with defined bands, each led by a stallion.  But they often come together as a larger community to socialize.

Hundreds of miles of open range makes finding these horses difficult.
Horses move up into foothills covered with scrub, making them almost invisible.
Lying down in the scrub makes them hard to see.
