Capturing the Nothing

When there is nothing to shoot, ...shoot the nothing.

I am drawn to nothingness.  In Washington's Palouse region, there are miles of beautiful endless rolling wheat fields.  By themselves, they are unremarkable in their repetitive sameness.  They come alive with the light and drama of storms, and present a mood that is both quiet and powerful.

But capturing this lonely mood in a composition takes luck and days of driving on dirt roads waiting for the evening light to break through the rain clouds, or waiting for a tractor or to find a rare old barn,  But usually I must find beauty in the minimal patterns in the grass.
When there is nothing to shoot, shoot the nothing.
I try to push my black and white toward a graphite drawing and textured abstraction.
