Macro and Micro-Causal Mechanisms and Behavioral Issues

Over the years, author and educator L. Jay Mitchell has directed several residential programs that encourage self-development among teens. In his role as Greenbrier Academy owner, L. Jay Mitchell oversees a therapeutic boarding school that enables young women to move beyond issues of anxiety, self-esteem, depression, and addiction.

One core aspect of the recovery process involves distinguishing between macro and micro-causal mechanisms. Understanding the macro-causal mechanism when diagnosing behavioral issues begins with understanding how the subconscious parts of self fit together. Conflict occurs when one part of you wants one thing and the other part wants another. This prevents the setting of positive goals and intentions, and obtaining results that truly benefit oneself.

Another macro-causal mechanism involves negative beliefs such as “I am not good enough” or “I am a victim.” These are both self-defeating and prevent one from healing and eliminating behavioral challenges. Other macro-causal mechanisms include epigenetic inherited beliefs that trigger responses in specific genes. One manifestation is when fears and reactions to stress have been handed down across the generations, such as with the offspring of Holocaust survivors.

Treating such macro-causal mechanisms is not simply a matter of treating symptoms, but requires a deeper approach. Micro-causal mechanisms, or an intervention’s “critical individual steps,” must be influenced and directed in ways that gradually exert positive change.
