An Overview of the Mission Discovery Program

A neurolinguistics trainer graduate of the University of Idaho School of Law, L Jay Mitchell is the founder and principal owner of Greenbriar Academy for Girls. Based in West Virginia, the academy is a therapeutic boarding school that offers several programs, including the Young Women’s Healing Village Retreat. Beyond this work, L Jay Mitchell supports several educational initiatives, such as the Mission Discovery Program.

Created in 2011, Mission Discovery is open to teenagers aged 14 and 18. The program involves summer schools, set up throughout the world, that give participants a chance to work directly with NASA personnel, rocket scientists, and astronauts. The program has no entry criteria, meaning teenagers from all educational backgrounds can participate.

Mission Control engages students by having them work alongside professionals to design an experiment that could benefit humanity. This experiment typically involves the use of core STEM skills, allowing participants to see the practical value that STEM subjects have. Lasting for a week, which concludes with a presentation given to the program’s judges, Mission Control selects the best experiment for astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) to conduct. Since its formation, Mission Control has welcomed over 16,000 students across four continents and has sent 42 experiments to the ISS.
