Can You Outsource Engineering Services?

Can outsourcing work for engineering services? With outsourcing on the rise, many professionals are taking a second look at outsourcing. For some industries, outsourcing is not new; it has been around for years. But outsourcing takes on new meaning when you outsource your engineering services. The biggest reason why engineers say outsourcing will never work with their profession is because of the need for confidentiality and security in certain projects.

What about manufacturing companies that want to outsource all or parts of an engineering project? Some companies have had success outsourcing home improvements projects such as off-shore oil drilling rigs and other commercial vessels, but they're still taking a chance when it comes to outsourcing more delicate projects such as military aircraft, medical equipment and even computers and machines used within commercial buildings.

In this article, we’re going to talk about the benefits of outsourcing engineering services, and why engineering firms from around the world are recommending this strategy.

What is outsourcing engineering services?

Engineering outsourcing services is a term used to describe outsourcing tasks that are related to engineering services to save money, time, and/or energy. This outsourcing can be from either in-house engineers or external companies.

Though outsourcing is an option available to all businesses, it is more often utilized by large corporations when they require equipment or products which they do not make themselves. However, even small businesses will take advantage of outsourcing to save time and resources.

Outsourcing is now common practice for companies of all sizes, even those that are smaller than outsourcing companies themselves. Engineers are currently being outsourced from all over the world in countries with particularly educated workforces, including Australia, South Africa, India, the Philippines and Ukraine. Engineers can be brought on board to help out for specific projects or full-time depending on what side of outsourcing they fit into best.

Benefits of outsourcing engineering services

Many companies outsource their engineering services because it is often very expensive to hire full-time engineers.

The outsourcing of engineering services can benefit your company in many ways, depending on your industry and the type of outsourcing you are doing. The benefits include:

Reducing costs: One-way outsourcing can benefit a business is by reducing operating expenses. If an outsourcing firm already has sufficiently trained employees experienced in performing the same task as those at your company, then it may be cheaper to outsource that function than to pay current staff members who probably will have higher wages due to tenure or experience with the company. You also avoid paying for employee benefits, office space and equipment needed for day-to-day operations. This can result in big savings! However, outsourcing can also raise costs if the outsourcing company is new and does not have a proven track record.

Gaining access to specialized skills: Some outsourcing companies direct their focus towards outsourcing specific jobs for a variety of industries, such as engineering or manufacturing. These outsourcing firms then hire seasoned professionals that specialize in these fields. This allows your company quick access to deep expertise you might otherwise lack, particularly if it has just started operating.

Increasing flexibility: You may find that outsourcing enhances your business' ability to quickly adjust to change by allowing you to quickly reconfigure teams according to shifting priorities. This can afford businesses more agility than they would enjoy if they had employees dedicated exclusively to certain functions within the company, instead of outsourcing those functions when needed. When outsourcing, you can quickly ramp up to meet an urgent deadline or remove the outsourcing resource if it is no longer needed.

You should seek out outsourcing companies that have a proven track record in your industry for outsourcing engineering services because it will allow you to enjoy the above-mentioned benefits without struggle.

When to outsource and when not to outsource your engineering services

Startups and product companies often need engineering help. Many founders get engineering outsourcing wrong. They either outsource too late (when their costs skyrocket) or outsource early (when it's not necessary). This post is about outsourcing your engineering needs — when to do it and when not to do it. Note that I'm talking about outsourcing the work of building a product, not outsourcing the recruiting and hiring of engineers (this is an important distinction and outsourcing engineering management can be very tricky -- but that's another topic for another day).

As much as possible, don't build custom software yourself. Unless you're Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter or one of the handfuls of other extremely talented engineers/product people in the world today then just don't do it. Yes, I know - outsourcing sucks because you have to pay them and then manage them to get quality work done.

But outsourcing early means that you're not spending too much time building stuff that doesn't need to be built yet. Outsourcing early gives you the runway you need to focus on developing your product without being distracted by having to build custom software or infrastructure yourself.

Early outsourcing is often better than late outsourcing because it's less expensive (you've acquired fewer people) and you can pivot sooner if necessary (without having paid for dead-end efforts). For example, outsourcing web design is a good idea early rather than late because there are dozens of very talented designers out who can whip up an attractive site in a week and you can easily change it up or scrap/rebuild it without too much time sunk into creating the 'perfect design.

But outsourcing isn't that complicated. The whole point of outsourcing is to get someone else who knows better than you to do whatever work needs to be done.

Outsourcing engineering service providers

Whether outsourcing is about offshoring or outsourcing, it can be equally important to finding the right partner for your needs.

When outsourcing engineering service providers are considered, many different things need to be considered. This is because outsourcing may lead to a large volume of data being exported from one company to another. So you will certainly expect on-time delivery and great quality with this volume of data.

- Always make sure the outsourcing partner has some references available on request

- Make sure that outsourcing partners have expertise in the field you want work done in

- Ask for examples of previous works worked on by each of your outsourcing partners  and check out their portfolio if they have any

- Outsourcing partners should not just provide project management support, they should provide a full outsourcing solution in the outsourcing field

- Most outsourcing partners will be offshore outsourcing companies but make sure your outsourcing partner has some onshore outsourcing capabilities as well

- Make sure you have a minimum of 3 outsourcing quotes from different offshoring companies to ensure you can find the best deal possible
