Located on Route Napoléon, on the banks of the Durance river, and at the foot of the Baronnies mountains, Sisteron also known as the "Pearl of Upper Provence." Due to its wealth, Sisteron was first fortified by the Counts of Forcalquier in the 11th century. One of the most notable attractions in Sisteron is the citadel. This fortification dates back to the 13th century and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can take a guided tour of the citadel and learn about its history and architecture. The town is also known for its well-preserved old town, with its narrow streets and charming buildings, many of which date back to the medieval period. Visitors can explore the town's many museums and historical sites, including the ancient Roman bridge and the Saint-Thyrse church, which dates back to the 12th century.
I love wandering through the old town of Sisteron, which is like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets and charming buildings, many of which date back to the medieval period, create a unique and timeless atmosphere. The town's museums and historical sites, such as the ancient Roman bridge and the Saint-Thyrse church, offer a fascinating glimpse into the town's rich cultural heritage. The view of their narrow alley with the Baume rock in the background is just magical. This is one of those places that I can categorize as unique and unforgettable. Enjoy!
