The project "The Sphere" is based on a competition assignment “Athenaeum of Architecture”. The territory is located in Copenhagen, Denmark, more specifically in the east side of the city, on an artificial island with a rich industrial history. Surrounded from 3 sides with water and with a direct visual contact with the historical center of Copenhagen, the site combines the constant connection with the past and the traditions with the contrast of the new era and the contemporary idea of art and creativity.
With this project I want to show one experimental approach, manifest for the meaning behind architecture, for the philosophical side and depth, for architecture as a story, as an experience connecting it with people, for the spaces which devour the person and make way for the the imaginary perception of reality to be the driving force. Especially this project is concentrated on the double reading, where everything has more than one exact answer and is open for the individual interpretation. The main example for this double reading is the clash between order and chaos, two absolutely opposing contrast characteristics, derived from each other and the story of their metamorphosis.
In the context of the new era and with the idea of optimisation and perfection my project from it’s fundamental starting form is one ideal sphere. With it’s gradually metamorphosis the form passes through different stages. Finally it reaches the stage of a deconstructed sphere, presented most importantly with the constructive elements of rotated and deformed giant bricks (blocks) and inside and outside giant tribunes. Separated from the ground in 2 parts, the deconstucted sphere consists of two parts - above the ground part and below the ground part. The outside above ground world represents the economic, capitalist and consumer side of architecture, which unfortunately is much more desirable in today’s world. The inside below ground world represents architecture as an art, as a sacred temple - a huge museum, going 15m below ground level and reaching a panoramic glass with a deep underwater view. People has main participation in these two worlds - inside and outside. With climbing the “giant bricks” in the outside world people experience architecture, it is given a freedom to their curiosity. In the inside world, working as a contrast, the person is fully swallowed by the mystery of the forms and the spaces, the emptiness of the core, the atrium, exploring the museum and walking slowly more and more underwater.
Personifying the concept of eclecticism, dynamic and change, but meanwhile with a monumental character, the building outside has a strong urban nature. It is one infrastructure for people, bringing them together, giving them the places to socialize, explore and interpret, but also providing them with intimacy, where everyone can have their adventure on their own and figure out the meaning behind the architecture symbols.
