Ishi Center and Museum on Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island is a rare sacred place on the California shoreline. Series of diagrams were produced to analyze the history, natural conditions, flora, fauna, views, circulation paths, and existing man-made and natural structures. Consequently, secular and sacred areas were defined. Ishi Center and Museum inhabits the sacred side of Alcatraz. The sequence of spread programmatic elements gives a visitor a chance to experience and feel the diversity of architecture and natural surroundings. Hotel on a secular side of the island opens up to the views of downtown San Francisco. Radical  circulation proposal is a ‘channel’- longitudinal cut-through the island. It serves as a straightforward pedestrian path between furthest viewpoints and allows for creative program interaction. Pocket-like spaces and gardens, large open spaces and dramatic landscape along the shoreline and within the ‘channel’ open up the opportunity for diverse experiences and atmospheres- from private/ semiprivate gardens to interactive crowded public areas.

Among the important ideas and goals are:
1. Deconstruction of the old man-made structures
2. Integration of the nature back into the island
3. Analysis and reinvention of the programmatic elements
4. Redefinition of the circulation network
