Interactive Installation "Senses Reconnected"

This is an interactive installation called "senses reconnected". It is a student project that has been realized within one semester at the Media University of Stuttgart. The team consisted of 12 members.
After finishing, senses reconnected was exhibited in the "Haus der Wirtschaft" (house of economy) in Stuttgart, Germany, as well as at SAP in Walldorf, Germany.

The idea was to get people to think about the impact that the constant development of interfaces causes to human beings - especially concerning the question of whether or not the growing use of advanced interfaces effects people to think, perceive and especially feel differently towards reality or rather the "real world".

The installation is divided in three main parts.
The first part is the "real world" which is incorporated by three columns, where one can see, feel, smell and hear three common Middle European natural environments as lakes, mountains and forests at once. What people see, feel, smell and hear is exactly what they get and nothing but "truth".

The second and third part stands for the augmented and virtual reality and is represented by three terminals forming an approximated sphere as well as a center.
At each terminal users can produce and receive information via video and voice messages as well as by using a newly developed haptic interface that makes it possible for people to touch one another virtually.
In the center of the installation the data is collected. Though it is possible for other users to switch and distribute the signals. Thus it is possible to for example take a user's video signal and send it to another user as an auditive, visual or haptic experience. All the different senses can therefore be transformed into one another.
The effect is that users do not necessarily understand what kind of information they receive and what the information once was. Only if they take their time and attend to understand the terminal interface they can understand what kind of information they send, what kind of information they receive, to whom their information is being send to as well as from whom they receive information. Above all they will slowly understand how the information is being transformed and in the best case that what they see is not necessarily what they are used and supposed to get.

My tasks in this project were:
Concept, Co Art Director, Head of Production, Head of Sound Design, Programming, Staging and Photography
Part of the team playing with the installation.
The red, green and blue light tubes above the screens are the color code for each terminal. Additionally they are producing light pulses as data is sent. These visual pulses are synced with sound pulses.
The installation in standby mode.
A 360° shot from the bottom of the green terminal.
Time lapse video of the set up.
