Give it a Shape
This series features graphics I've created over the past three years, inspired by phrases encountered in my daily life—whether on the street, in books, on social networks, or in conversations with friends. For me, visual expression often proves more accessible than words. Thus, what you'll find depicted here reflects the abstract shapes that populate my mind during these exchanges. I also draw inspiration from the representations of mathematical equations, because I find it fascinating how these organized concepts manifest into visually captivating graphics, revealing the inherent beauty within the rules governing the universe.
I didn’t want these graphics to be confined solely to the digital realm, so I produced a series of posters showcasing the most poignant visuals and phrases. Printed on smoke acrylic in black ink, these posters remain enigmatic until viewers make a deliberate effort to decipher them. By demanding this extra level of engagement, I aim to encourage attentiveness and presence. Moreover, when illuminated, the graphics cast intricate shadows, creating a dynamic interplay between light and darkness—a fitting embodiment of my fascination with contrasts.
Having had the privilege to exhibit at the Art Number 23 gallery in Barcelona, I witnessed firsthand the intrigue these visuals sparked among visitors. It was gratifying to observe them repeatedly drawn to the shapes, engaging in discussions about their composition and perceived meanings.
Case studies
From this personal project emerged a distinct visual identity that has become my signature, extending into various other endeavors:
1. Encrypted Words
My affinity for enigmas and hidden messages led me to explore a form of unintelligible data visualization—a chaotic arrangement akin to knots, inspired by the notion that "chaos is the order that is not understood." Beginning with a clear vision of the desired shape, I embarked on a formal exploration culminating in a template divided into three quadrants, each containing the letters of the alphabet.
To achieve the desired cyclical form, the letters comprising the word are strategically positioned within these quadrants in a sequential order. This arrangement yields a closed curve that connects the points in each quadrant, with any necessary smoothing applied to enhance visual appeal.
Thus far, these knots have found a home in the form of tattoos across Colombia, Mexico, Italy, and Spain, with hopes of expanding their reach globally! (Drop a line to @nebulinea :))
2. Hoodie Design
At Harbour.Space University, an annual contest invites students to submit design proposals for the year's hoodie. While the brief stipulates the use of institutional colors and simplicity on the front, creativity knows no bounds for the back design, provided it employs a single ink.
The brief was a bit general for me, and this is also reflected in the designs of past years. I wanted this time to have a stronger message, so I made my own brief: to create a hoodie that appeals to students by eschewing overt branding, yet embodies the values of the university.
Drawing theoretical inspiration from chaos theory and graphical influence from the Lorenz Attractor, the design reflects Harbour.Space's ethos as a disruptive institution fostering collaboration between creative and scientific disciplines. It serves as a tangible representation of our commitment to cultivating solutions that transcend classroom boundaries, poised to make a meaningful impact in the real world.
