Ryan Hicks's profile

Cubop, Ubiquity Records Latin jazz

Album artwork. San Francisco, 1999-2002.

Album artwork design and production for CuBop, the Ubiquity Records Latin-jazz imprint. With Andrew Enoch, client/producer/archivist.

CD and vinyl formats. Generally 4-color booklets with 4c over 1- or 2-color tray inserts. Discs usually 2- or 3- color, often with knock-through to the disc surface to add further dimension.

As many of the releases were reissues or compilations pulled together by the label, imagery had to be sourced from archival photos. Working with Andrew Enoch, we had to pick and choose what we thought would work best and then do a bunch of restoration. I tended to approach the typography like an instrument, playing characters and words as notes and measures, with intonations of spaces full of color.
