Great Lakes Science Challenge Board Game

Great Lakes Science Challenge Board Game
Graphic Design II - January-March 2010
Project Brief

The goal of this project is to share a personal experience with an audience. You must have an "experience" and then present the information learned and the narrative of your journey in a nontraditional form. The final format can be anything as long as it relates to the subject, speaks to the target audience, and shares your experience.

My Solution

For my experience I went to the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland, Ohio with my family. The trip turned out to be a great opportunity for my family to spend time together and we discovered that the Science Center appealed to all ages. Wanting to take the experience home and encourage families to spend more time together, I decided to create a board game that could be purchased at the Science Center's gift shop. The board game itself would contain information that visitors learn at the Science Center as well as science experiment challenges to reflect the interactivity of the science exhibits. My target audience were families with younger children. In order to appeal to the target audience, I used bright colors and cartoon illustrations. The game consists of three trivia categories and a science experiment challenge category. Each category has its icon and corresponding color. As a player answers a question correctly or successfully completes a challenge, they earn a point card for that category. The players move across the board with one of four characters that I created in Adobe Illustrator. The game also contains a map of the Science Center with certain areas highlighted showing where visitors can learn about the different categories in the game.
