One of the critical missions of the conservation organization is ensuring that stream and river ecosystems are preserved, enabling fish and other species to thrive in the wild. In June 2021, the Grand County, Colorado chapter of Trout Unlimited received a $250,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s (NFWF) Restoration and Stewardship of Outdoor Resources and Environment (RESTORE) initiative. The RESTORE funds are being directed toward restoration efforts encompassing the South Platte watershed, which skirts the Rockies and follows the course of the Platte river. Extending into Wyoming and Nebraska, it includes expanding urban areas such as Fort Collins, Boulder, and Denver.

With Trout Unlimited one of 10 groups to receive NFWF RESTORE funding in 2021, its work centers on a site encompassing 4.3 miles of stream, 111 wetland acres, and 164 riparian acres. These habitats are interconnected and together make up a biologically vital ecosystem that helps ensure clean water for humans. Beyond fish, the native species the project is aimed at protecting include the northern leopard frog, the boreal toad, and the river otter. The project also seeks to provide habitat for threatened avian species such as the short-eared owl, Lewis’s woodpecker, and bald eagle.
