TU Completes Removal of in-Stream Barriers

Investments consultant and conservationist Ernest Montford holds the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) designation. He served as CEO of Montford Associates, an investments consulting firm, for 21 years until the firm closed in 2010. Ernest Montford, who resides in Highlands, North Carolina, is a lifetime member of Trout Unlimited (TU), one of the first conservation organizations in America.

TU has completed projects that removed in-stream barriers from Powdermill and Rock Cedar creeks. The clearing projects opened up miles of habitat for trout and other similar freshwater species in these North Carolina streams found in the Southern Appalachians.

At Powdermill Creek, which is located within the North Carolina State Parks, removing the clogged and undersized culvert stabilized the instream channel to its supposed natural condition. The project also eliminated bank constriction and potential sedimentation. The Powdermill project was done in partnership with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

The Cedar Rock project removed a concrete low water ford, including two 24-inch diameters by 30-feet long culverts, and was replaced with a new bottomless culvert spanning 18 feet. This project required strict adherence to construction and design standards to satisfy pubic vehicular demands. The total cost of this project was $297,000.
