The visualization shows the average proportion and number of environmental defender deaths in Brazil from 2015-2019 by state. Data provided by Global Witness. Data analysis conducted by Atmos.
The map shows the deforestation rates between 2018-2020 by state, as well as locations mentioned throughout the story. Data by Brazil National Institute for Space Research.
The projects have been designed for the article Paid in Blood, piece on Fernando dos Santos Araújo, land rights defender who was killed in the Brazilian state of Pará in January.
